Tips & tricks

Shortcuts, gotchas, and workflows that experienced Ekko users wish they had known on day one.

Anyone who has used Ekko for at least one full sprint cycle and wants to get faster.

A grab bag of things that are easy to miss in the UI but make a real difference once you know them.

Sprint Planning tricks

  • Use the assignee filter on the legend, then walk each filtered task — fastest way to do a per-person review in planning.
  • Bulk-select backlog items and move them in one click rather than dragging them one by one.
  • The capacity pane updates live as you change assignees, estimates, or points — leave it open while you re-balance the sprint.
  • Got a linked-task chain? Use "Assign all linked" to one-shot the whole chain to a single owner.
  • Click a sprint name in the slim header to switch sprints without leaving the page — useful for back-to-back planning sessions on different boards.

Capacity tricks

  • If capacity numbers look wrong, hover the Time Off, Tax, and Holidays chips — the tooltips show exactly which entries contributed.
  • When a sprint has no start/end dates, click "Set sprint range" in the capacity header — Ekko writes the dates back to Jira so the board agrees.
  • For mixed cross-functional sprints, turn on Team-only to hide assignees who are not on your project team.
  • A person at 0 available (all PTO) shows as "Out" — not as a divide-by-zero. Useful sanity check when you wonder why the whole row went weird.

Task Creator tricks

  • Templates + variables = workflow superpower. Build a "QA pack" template with {parentSummary} in the summary, fan it out across every story in your sprint, done.
  • Set a global parent if you want every created issue to also live under an epic — saves a separate "link to epic" pass.
  • The Live Preview panel on the right is not just decorative — it expands variables against real parents so you can verify your template before clicking Create.
  • If bulk-create partially fails, the success modal lists what made it. Fix the bad one and re-run only the failed drafts — same template, no copy-paste.

Sprint Poker tricks

  • Share the QR code on a meeting-room TV — phones in the room scan it and join without the host typing anyone an URL.
  • Set Consensus writes to Jira immediately. If you change your mind after the team has agreed, edit the points field on the issue card in Sprint Planning.
  • A session stays alive across host refreshes for a grace period. If you close your browser by accident, refresh fast and you can rejoin the same session.
  • Switching sprints ends the active session — by design. Voters get a friendly "session ended" screen rather than a stale link.

Team & holiday tricks

  • Add every holiday at the start of the year. You will never have to think about short-week capacity again.
  • Per-person tax overrides are the right tool for on-call rotations, manager duties, and contractors — set them once, capacity is right forever.
  • PTO supports 0.5 / 0.25 days. Half-day Friday? Enter it. Capacity reflects it.

Gotchas

  • Bulk Jira creates are not atomic. If issue 7 of 10 fails, the first 6 are real. Always read the success modal's "created" list before re-running.
  • "Assign all linked" is not undo-able. Double-check the assignee before clicking.
  • Switching capacity mode in Settings does not delete data, but every Ekko screen flips units at once. Agree with your team on hours vs points before flipping.
  • Resetting onboarding does not delete anything — it just re-shows the wizard.
  • A Forge plan-tier or license expiry shows the License Inactive page. Restore your subscription and the app returns to normal — no data is lost.
